Halloween Carnival – The PTA is sponsoring a Halloween Carnival on Friday, October 23rd. The doors will open at 5:30 for early bird ticket holders. General ticket sales ($5) will be at the library doors. The games will be from 6-8 with the raffle at 7:30. Our class is sponsoring a “Kitchen Essentials” basket for the silent auction. The last day to donate is Monday. Thank you to all the families who sent in things to make our basket terrific.
Teacher of the Week- Several parents have contacting me asking for more information on the teacher of the week presentations. The teacher of the week can be anything. I have presented 3. I did the first one on a hummingbird, the second on the state of California and the third on Christopher Columbus. I just hung a picture or two, a diagram and told a little about each subject. A great source of information is http://www.enchantedlearning.com/Home.shtml. We are doing this instead of the student in the spotlight because we did that last year.
School Arrival
Your child needs to go directly to the playground when they arrive. This is a great opportunity for your child to greet and talk to their friends before school starts. When the first bell rings at 8:30, they will line up outside our classroom doors. If it is raining or too cold to be safe, the children will be brought in. Currently, it is not too cold for them to be outside. Your child should not arrive or be dropped off before 8:20 because there is no supervision. Please do not bring your child into the classroom before the first bell at 8:30. Teachers have meetings and are preparing for the school day before 8:30 and may not be in the classroom.
Party Money
We are collecting $5 from each student for party money to help pay for the costs of crafts, etc. It will be used for our Halloween, Holiday, Valentine’s Day and a 100th day celebration. You will also be contacted for donations for the parties such as: cookies, drinks, etc.
Halloween Party
Our Halloween Party will be at 9:30 before the Halloween parade at 10:30. Our students will be in music when the parade commences. Please feel free to come to the party and stay for the parade.
Volunteers for the Halloween Party
I did not have any parents volunteer to be a room parent. Are there any volunteers who are willing to just organize the Halloween party and then we can have a different parent organize each of the other parties? Please contact me if you can give us a hand or help out.
What We’ve Been Learning:
Math-We have just finished our chapter on subtraction and have started a chapter on graphing. There will be a test covering addition, subtraction and graphing when we finish this chapter. It will be followed my two short units on plane figures and three dimensional figures.
Social Studies: We have been studying about different types of communities. We have noticed differences and similarities between cities, small towns and suburban communities. We have also been learning about human features (bridges, roads) and natural features (lakes, plant life) of a community.
Science: We had a lot of fun trying out different things with shadows. We found a way to step on the head of our own shadow. We learned about the colors of a rainbow and saw light filtered through a prism. Ask your child about Roy G. Biv. We have been discussing the difference between transparent, translucent and opaque.
Writing: We have been noticing how authors use punctuation to change the meaning of sentences and to inform the reader about the way the story should be read.
Reading: We have been talking about main and supporting characters and retelling stories. We have been making jots in our reader’s notebook to help us have conversations with our reading partners.
This Week’s Homework-
1. Spelling: Please pick three things from the list each week for homework. Please let me know which items your child did for homework.
2. Math: Please complete and return the math homework that matches our math lessons in class. I have covered the matching lessons in class this week.
3. Reading: Remember to read 15 minutes every day. Remember to record on your monthly reading calendar.
Reminders:
Conferences: Please see the back of the newsletter for the conference schedules. If you do not have an appointment or need to change your appointment time, please stop outside the office or call the office to schedule an appointment.
Have a Great Weekend!
