Wow, we had another fantastic week in second grade.  I felt like I needed to send another newsletter because several things came up during the week that requires your attention.

Curriculum Night- Curriculum night is Tuesday, September 22 at 5:15.  We will go over the second grade curriculum, classroom and school expectations.  I look forward to seeing in our classroom.

School Pictures-School pictures are Friday, September 25th.  Please be sure to send in the money and envelope.  If your child forgets, they will have opportunity to purchase pictures on retake day.

Friday Folders- The Friday folder should then be returned each and every Monday.  Your child will earn lunch with Mrs. Goepfert after returning their Friday folder ten times.  I have taped a chart inside their folder to help keep track of their prompt return.  Homework does not need to be completed before the folder is turned in to the basket.

Thank You- Thank you for honoring our early morning procedures and having your child wait on the playground until the first bell rings.  The students have been doing a fantastic job of going outside and waiting by the door before the bell rings.  Thank You!

Summer Journals- I told your child it’s not too late to bring in your summer journal and save it with the class.  I’m looking forward to seeing some more of the journals.

Addition and Subtraction Facts- We did a 3 minute timed math test on addition facts this week.  It was one of our timed test from last year and covered addition facts they should have mastered in first grade.  Please continue to work on addition and subtraction facts up to 20.  Your child should know these facts fluently for future success in math.

Brownie and Koko- Brownie, our traveling bear, has retired from his travels.  We have a new friend named Koko.  Koko is a gorilla and she has a nonfiction book to share with you.  It is a more difficult book and may require some assistance.  Koko is named after a gorilla that has learned --sign language and can be found online at: www.koko.org

What We’ve Been Learning:
Math: We have been reading, writing, ordering, comparing, problem solving and estimating numbers.  There will be a test on Tuesday.  A practice test and study guide will come home on Monday.
Social Studies: We have been discussing different kinds of families.
Science:  We have started the light and shadow unit.  We want to thank Mrs. Delbridge for covering our windows with black paper.
Writing: We are launching our writer’s notebooks and gathering ideas.
Reading:  We have been discussing expectations and I have started doing some reading assessments.

This Week’s Homework-
1.  Spelling:   I have made a copy of the choices for spelling homework sheet on card stock so you can save it for future use.  I will not be sending it home again, but do plan on putting it on my web page.  Please pick three things from the list each week for homework.  Please let me know which items your child did for homework.
2.  Math:  Please complete and return the math homework that matches our math lessons in class.  I have covered the matching lessons in class this week.
3.  Reading: Remember to read 15 minutes every day.   Remember to record on your monthly reading calendar.
